New Acting Director at Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC)
Pretoria - The Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, MP, has announced the appointment of Pieter Smit as an interim Director at the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), who will take up the position from 1 September 2023.
The interim Director is Pieter Smit, Executive Manager for Legal and Policy at the FIC. Smit has been with the FIC since its inception in 2003. His appointment follows the conclusion of Advocate Xolisile Khanyile's contract as Director of the FIC. Adv Khanyile was appointed as Director in January 2018.
Since her appointment Adv Khanyile has played a leading role in building partnerships domestically and abroad in the fight against financial crime. Under her guidance, the public-public collaboration of the Fusion Centre and public-private partnership of SAMLIT (South African Anti-Money Laundering Integrated Task Force) took hold. Adv Khanyile also held the position of Chair of the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units since July 2022.
As Executive Manager for Legal and Policy at the FIC, Smit's role includes overseeing the administration of legislation against money laundering and terrorist financing and the development of policy proposals on the implementation and reform of this legislation.
