Insurers converge to discuss enterprise development

Johannesburg - South Africa's major insurance companies together with its industry body, the South African Insurance Association (SAIA) hosted a forum on Enterprise Development (ED) to highlight its importance as part of the country's national agenda.

SAIA led a panel discussion to inform its stakeholders of industry initiatives implemented by Short-term Insurers and the challenges facing the industry.

SAIA Transformation and Social Risks General Manager, Leila Moonda said in Newtown that small businesses form an important part of our economy and is a priority for job creation and is key to our country’s growth agenda.

"As the short-term insurance industry we are able to play an important role in the development of our country’s economy and our support of small businesses is imperative to economic growth," said Moonda.

Moonda added that ED was more than just complying with Codes of Good Practice as stipulated by the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act.

"Collaborative efforts with stakeholders are vital. We need to explore business opportunities with all role players to support small businesses and to stimulate entrepreneurial activity."

CEO’s of short term insurance involved in ED, Adam Samie, Chief Executive, Lion of Africa Insurance Company (Ltd), Garikai Dhombo, Managing Director Alexander Forbes Insurance Company (Ltd.), Anton Ossip, Chief Executive, Discovery Insure (Ltd) and Hollard represented by Malcolm Schnaid, Group Procurement addressed the audience on ED at the forum. The panel discussion was facilitated by Nelson Sebati, a professional empowerment advisor.

"The industry has a significant role to play and we want to reaffirm our commitment and support for small businesses" Moonda said.
