Johannesburg - With South Africa having the tenth longest road network in the world, at 750 000kms, travelling around the country by road is often the most efficient way to get to your destination.

However the country also has one of the highest rates of road fatalities in the world, with an average of around 14 000 deaths per year.

Added to this, in June last year, the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) reported there were more than 800 000 road accidents annually, or roughly 2 200 crashes daily.

This costs the economy a staggering amount. The most recent estimate by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) suggests this could be just under R200 billion a year.

At the same time, accidents of all types can also happen in your own home.  These too are unplanned, unexpected and the associated medical treatment can sometimes be a financial strain on consumers' already stretched budgets, especially for those without medical insurance.

Medical expenses can typically include hospitalisation, specialists' fees, rehabilitation, medical investigations such as blood tests, CT scans, MRIs, ultrasounds, and other non-medical costs.

Importantly, speedy and efficient medical care at times like this, could mean the difference between life or death.  This is sometimes the unfortunate choice that must be made in the in the absence of a medical aid, or some other form of medical insurance.  It also something that people often consider when it is too late.

Putting this into perspective, Teshlin Akaloo, Managing Director of NetcarePlus, says, "Emergency medical treatment, for instance a stay in the intensive care unit (ICU), could prove to be very costly, especially if specialised ICU treatment is required."

"NetcarePlus' Accident and Trauma Cover, is your insurance safety net should you require medical attention if you, or any of your loved ones do not have medical aid and are involved in an accident.  Some of the benefits of this cover includes: unlimited emergency medical hospital treatment, ambulance transportation, trauma counselling, road accident fund claim assistance and an additional family care benefit that provides a cash pay-out to help your family with other expenses while you are hospitalised."
