FSCA announces winners of the 2023 Financial Literacy Speech Competition

Pretoria - The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) held its 7th annual Financial Literacy Speech Competition (FLSC) at the O.R. Tambo Sun International Hotel in Johannesburg on Friday,13 October 2023. Grade 11 learners from across the country participated in the competition, showcasing their financial knowledge and public speaking abilities. Since its inception in 2016, with learners from only 150 schools in the Gauteng region participating, the competition has grown into a national event. This year it attracted over 52 000 learners,
marking an increase of a thousand from the previous year.

The FLSC affords learners an opportunity to develop their research and presentation skills, while also learning about financial planning. Learners present speeches on topics such as financial planning, consumer protection, and consumer rights and responsibilities. The impact of this initiative extends beyond the participating learners, it positively touches the lives of their teachers, families, and communities.

With this year's national finals showcasing exceptional talent and potential, we are pleased to announce the following winners of the FLSC:

1. Müchinn Jantjies - First Place
2. Calado Mabunda - Second Place
3. Kgaugelo Mafa - Third Place

Each winner was awarded a bursary worth R555 000,00 as the main prize and investment prizes of R72,000, R54,000 and R45,000, respectively. These prizes are in addition to the investment prize worth R36,000 each winner received for winning their respective provincial finals.

For the FSCA, the competition is more than just empowering young minds with knowledge of managing money and making informed financial decisions, it speaks directly to our mandate and key objectives. Addressing the audience, FSCA Deputy Commissioner, Astrid Ludin said, “The significance of this competition extends beyond the numbers, it's about fostering financial resilience in South African households.” She further encouraged
learners to be advocates for financial literacy in their schools and communities.

This year, the FSCA also piloted a programme for Grade R learners, aiming to instill financial literacy skills to even younger learners. Six-year-old Hlompho Chokoe, a grade R learner from Hillside Primary School in Laudium, stole the show with her speech titled “The Mandela Legacy”.
