Real-world challenges
Episode 2, sponsored by Aon South Africa, which aired on SABC 3 on Thursday, 24 July, placed the spotlight on one of South Africa's most pressing economic issues – the sustainability of Small, Medium, and Micro-Enterprises (SMMEs).
SMMEs are the lifeblood of South Africa's economy, contributing over 40% of GDP and accounting for 87% of employment. Yet, their survival rate remains alarmingly low, with up to 80% failing in the first year. This week, the Top 10 contestants were tasked with finding innovative insurance solutions and partnerships that could help turn the tide for this critical sector.
The challenge: insurance for SMMEs
Under the guidance of a powerhouse judging panel – Dr Nolwandle Mgoqi (CEO of Aon South Africa), Nox Dlamini, and Head Judge Simon Colman (CEO of The Liability Company) – contestants were challenged to:
- Identify both what the typical asset is that can be insured, and also highlight what cannot be insured when talking SMMEs;
- Propose strategic partnerships between brokers, insurers, and government entities;
- Develop consumer education strategies to empower entrepreneurs; and
- Suggest accessible distribution models to reach underserved businesses.
This episode is about more than just insurance – it's about creating real, sustainable impact. The contestants were pushed to think beyond policies and premiums, and to design solutions that build resilience for the backbone of our economy.
Who stays, who goes?
With creativity, research depth, and impact under the spotlight, the pressure in the boardroom intensifies. For one contestant, the journey ends here...
Who stood out, and who was sent home?
